Sedation and Anaesthesia

WHAT THEY ARE

During dental and surgical procedures, local anaesthesia (freezing) may be administered to  the teeth to block sensations.

Despite this, however, many people still feel uncomfortable and anxious in the dental environment.

The anxiety that these people experience can be controlled by administering a sedative. A sedated patient is unlikely to remember the procedures and will be more relaxed.

In some situations patients are required to be more deeply asleep . This is called Sleep Dentistry.

How is the Medication Administered?

The sedative and anaesthetic medications are typically given intravenously--through a vein in the arm.

This allows your dentist to precisely give the appropriate amounts of the medication to make you relaxed and comfortable throughout the appointment.

How am I Monitored?

Depending on the depth of the sedation and anaesthetic required, as well as your own medical condition, various monitors are used.

These may include automatic blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters (which, through a light sensor, measure the oxygen in your blood, as well as your pulse) and a heart monitor (EKG).

The dentist, along with at least one trained member of the staff will be with you and closely observing you throughout your treatment.

Is Anaesthesia Safe?
The use of sedation and anaesthesia in dentistry has an excellent record of safety. There are scientific studies available which document this.
Our d octors have all had advanced training. As well, Dr. Nkansah is currently the President of the Canadian Association of Dental Anaesthesia. The Doctors and their teams are committed to your overall health as their primary concern.
In Ontario a special permit is required to administer intravenous medication.
In order to receive this certificate, we had to provide evidence of advance training in anaesthesia.
In addition, our office is specially equipped, inspected regularly and registered with The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario as being able to safely provide anaesthesia services.

Please Note: It is important to advise us of all medication that you take
and of any changes in your health since
your last visit.
